On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King (Hodder & Stoughton, 2000).
I am presently on my 6th or 7th reading of this book, and once again I am reminded of what a useful, entertaining and enlightening book it is. The book is divided into two parts. The first is an autobiographical section that tells the story of King's life to date, and how he found his way into writing. The second is a more instructive section in which he outlines his thoughts on what constitutes good writing, some dos and don'ts, and a few illustrative examples to clarify the points he makes.
Stephen King's writing is conversational, and therefore very readable, and he uses a well-balanced mixture of solid information and humour to convey his message. Whether or not you enjoy Stephen King's fiction, I recommend this book to any writer.
